Sharing A Wall with Your Competition | Winston-Salem Branding & Headshot Photographer
If you walk down our quaint little West End Boulevard, you’ll notice that there’s not one photography studio but three! It's a well known fact that the block our studio is on has these two other photography studios on it, studios that were there and well-established before we opened our own doors. In fact, if you look within a mile radius of our little Winston-Salem block, there are 19 other photographers located right by us. Almost all of these photographers do headshots and nearly half of them do some sort of branding photography. Yikes, right?!? Perhaps this seems like an oversaturated market - making starting your own business seemingly even more daunting - but there’s still a way to get a leg up in reaching your target market.
Even if you offer the same exact service or product as your next door neighbor, you can still have a leg up in reaching your target market. We, as branding and headshot photographers, aren't the only industry sharing walls with our competition. Every business has competitors. So how do we see people getting a leg up? Simple. Your story and brand personality.
Your story and brand personality are unique to you. They are infused in every single structure and aspect of your business. If you focus on showcasing your story and letting your brand personality come through, you'll attract the people who resonate with you - and that's exactly what we want, right? Giving this personal and transparent insight into your business builds your brand. You go from the photographer that "does headshots" to the photographer that "cares about helping your story connect you with your audience."
Here’s an easy, two sentence exercise that can help you begin to see how this groundwork tactic can work for you and your business. Just fill in the blanks below in each of these sentences.
The General Way most People Market :
”I am a [insert your job title here] who [general description of your services or what you do].”
Ex : I am a photographer who photographs headshots and branding for small businesses.
How to Market by Being Utilizing Your Brand Personality

These sentences may start out a little rough around the edges but take some time to make these statements your own and have a good flow to them!
